He is a conservative candidate for Richmond (Yorks) who is the head of the Black and Minority Ethnic Research unit. He was selected in October 2014.

He was elected an MP from the constituency, with a majority of 36.2 percent votes.

From 2015-2017, he served on the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

Sunak held a seat from his constituency in the 2017 general election. From 2018 to 2019, he served as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary on Local Government.

He was appointed Chief Secretary to Treasury by Boris Johnson and became a member of the Privy Council in 2019. In that year, he was also re-elected for a new term as a Member of Parliament in the general election.
